from then to now
There’s no questions about whether this blog has come a long way since the beginning of it back in February. I started with no goals in mind, no blogging connections, minimal knowledge, and just a passion for sharing my writing with others.
Although that passion remains today, boy have the other three points changed! Now I’m sitting here with clear-cut goals for myself, a ton more blogging knowledge than I ever thought even existed, and my favorite — lots of blogging buddies to share all of my frustrations, triumphs, and happy-dance-worthy news with!
Call me queen of being cheesy, but I’ve got to say it! Making connections with other bloggers throughout my short few months of blogging has easily become one of my favorite perks. I am all for #girlpower and being a #girlboss, and the blogging community is literally that. In a world today where so many girls find the need to compete and tear each other down, it has been so incredibly refreshing to become part of a community that believes in community over competition. I’ve made some blogging besties that I literally text on the daily (shoutout to Allison from The Savvy Camel, Jennifer from Beaches and Baubles, and Mary Kay from MAKA STYLE) and honestly, I’m quite positive I could not have come this far without the support from them and many more!
a fun game
Because of this amaaazing community, I was nominated by another blogging buddy of mine, Faryn from Really, It’s Fine to complete a fun post of 11 random questions she’s come up with for me to answer.
The game works like this: I answer her 11 questions, I propose 11 new questions, and I nominate 11 other blogging babes to answer my 11 questions asked! Then so on and so forth. My two favorite things about this game? 1) It’s a fun way to learn about other bloggers, outside of the blogging world. 2) I’m running out of content ideas for this month (shhhh…don’t tell!), so this is a perfect prompt to get my creative juices flowin’!
11 Questions Asked
1. What’s the number one tip you would give to new bloggers?
I feel kind of funny answering this question, because I still see myself as a new blogger! But I guess I do have a good five months under my belt so I’ll give it a go! I definitely learned my most valuable tip from Brittany of Not Another Blonde, engage engage engage.
After I began engaging with other bloggers photos, leaving genuine compliments, and setting aside time to network with other bloggers each day, I not only found my following increase quickly, but I found myself making genuine connections with girls I never would have talked to otherwise!
It is so dang important to find a network of blogging friends to keep close throughout this journey. Between the fact that Instagram is trying to take over the dang world with all of their new algorithm changes that are seriously hurting bloggers, and the fact that literally anyone can start a blog today, there are bound to be new frustrations everyday. Some of my best blogging friends have come from a simple compliment left on each other’s picture one day, and now I have them to thank for helping keep my sanity this whole time!
Sure it is absolutely important to stay true to yourself and let your own, authentic personality shine. But in all honestly, that’s hard to do if you don’t have a solid support system reminding you to not compare yourself to others on your darkest of blogging days. So to all you gals who’ve helped me along the way, thank you!
How is this applicable to the non-bloggers out there?
Yes, I’m looking at you! It totally still holds up. A genuine compliment can undoubtedly make anyone’s day, and you never know what kind of friendship can come out of it.
I was at the zoo with the kids I nanny the other day, having an absolutely awful Monday, and a girl stopped me and gushed about how much she loved my glasses. You bet that turned my mood right around!
Point being, it really doesn’t hurt to put yourself out there and try to put a smile on someone else’s face. I can almost guarantee you that you’ll receive lots of smiles in return!
2. If you could only eat one flavor of ice cream for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Hahahahaha, this has got to be the hardest question ever. Ice cream is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite dessert. So I’m going to go ahead and bypass the word “one” and opt for a top three.
- Chocolate Peanut Butter: Go ahead and try to tell me this isn’t the best flavor combination of all time. I’ll just tell you you’re wrong.
- S’mores: I’ve always loved s’mores, don’t get me wrong. But lately, my love has turned into an unstoppable adoration!
- Twist Cone with Crunch Coat: This is, without a doubt, my total go-to at any ice cream place if I’m having a simple sort of day.
3. Where do you do most of your shopping?
Omg I am the worst to ask this question because I don’t even know myself. Literally all over! Lately, I’m super into Shein, Target, Zara, and little boutiques. I’m still a college student aka I’m in a black hole of debt and have no sort of money for designer brands, so I make due with what I can. P.S: Nordstrom sale is going on right now so I obviously have to add that to the list! Shameless plug, but you can check out my shopping guide for them here! PS: everything is under $50!
4. What do you do that drives your significant other crazy?
Everything. Lol, Jake is such a trooper!
Hmmm. Let me think of one to pick.
I fall asleep during any movie, ever. No matter what it is, no matter if I’m the one that wanted to watch it, no matter what time it is, you bet I’ll be falling asleep.
5. What made you decide to start blogging?
Funny story, because it is totally random!
My friend Jamie from college was doing a challenge on Instagram of 100 days of happiness. Each day, for 100 days, she would post a picture on Instagram and list all of the things that made her happy that day, no matter how big or small.
This was at a time where I was hating school and being away from home for the first time, so I was searching for something to make me happy. I decided that starting this challenge would cause me to reflect on the little joys in life, rather than the annoyances and frustrations. And I guess it worked, because I love IU now!
Anyways, doing that each day made me remember how much I missed writing and sharing my thoughts and pictures with others, outside of regular Friday night Instagram pics. So once my 100 days were over, I decided to start a blog to continue documenting things that made me happy and sharing them with you!
Things looked a lot different back in February. For one, my blog name was nicolerosebalsamo instead of Relatable Red. My blog was a whooole lot different, and I didn’t really have a goal in mind other than fueling my passion to write.
But now, I’m here, I’m happy, and I’m beyond excited to keep this journey going.
I guess I have Jamie to thank for it all! 🙂
6. What is your go to song to when you’re getting ready to go out?
Okay hold your seats, I don’t really ever listen to music when getting ready. It’s probably became I’m running late 99% of my life and am just focused on trying to get myself out of the house, but getting ready to music has never been a thing for me!
With that said, though, I fricken love throwbacks! Give me some throwback Beyonce, Blink-182, Backstreet Boys, or *NYSNC and I can jam all night long!
7. What blogger do you look up to the most?
Without a doubt, I have to pick Brittany from Not Another Blonde. She is part fashion blogger, part blogger for bloggers, and I owe a lot of my success to her! She keeps things extremely real and to the point, and I’ve been able to learn so many things from her.
I absolutely admire the connection she has with her following and the way she has taken her blog and turned it into a business. I aspire to be as successful as she is one day, while staying true to my roots. I believe that one of my downfalls is being too nice and not assertive enough, and Brittany is the type of “hate me or love me, but here’s the facts” type of girl and I LOVE her for that! Definitely go check her out.
8. What’s the recipe for your specialty? (Yes, I plan on stealing all of these and using them for myself.)
Well well well, I don’t know how to cook many things. The things I can cook, though, I can cook well!
Anyone who has eaten my chocolate chip cookies will tell you that they’re the best (I’m saying this in the most humble way possible, lol!) so I guess I’ll go with that!
Want to know the huge secret?! It’s an online recipe I found from Allrecipes.com! I’m planning on doing a whole blog post about it for National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day in August, but here’s the link in case you have an emergency Chocolate Chip Cookie Baking Contest before then.
9. If you could meet any celebrity who would it be and why?
Okay, although I have many answers to this question for many different reasons, I have gotta go with Chrissy Teigen.
That girl is fricken hilarious! I so admire her authenticity and her “screw it, I’m me whether you like it or not” kind of mentality. Her outspoken opinions, her passion for all she does, and her hilarious sense of humor are things that make me adore her. I feel like me and her could have a reallll fun night out together!!
10. What kind of camera do you use for your blog?
LOL, another question I am so not qualified to answer. Remember how I’m a broke college girl? Yeah, this broke college girl does not have a nice camera in any way at all. Currently I’m rockin a cracked iPhone 6, but I definitely don’t use that for my blog pics.
Typically I just roll with whatever camera the person taking pics of me has. I’ve had quite a few different people photograph me, but since being home for the summer, it’s mostly just been Jake. We usually use his family’s Canon EOS 70D and it gives me the best pictures! If we’re just out and about and I force Jake to have an impromptu photoshoot of me, we just use his iPhone 6s which tends to have better pictures than my janky phone.
Here’s to hoping I invest in a camera soon!
11. What has been the most exciting thing to happen to you so far this year?
Oh boy, this has gotta be the hardest question to answer! 1) Because I have the worst memory, probably ever. 2) Because this year has been so eventful!
I can’t narrow it down to just one (can you tell I’m indecisive), so here’s a list of a few!
- The start of this blog
- My first nephew was born
- I signed for my first apartment with my besties for next school year
- Jake and I officially made it through our first year of long distance
- I met some of my bestest friends at school
- My summer work schedule allowed for lots of momma-daughter time
- I’ve been able to pinpoint goals and projects, so I have so many exciting things in the future lined up for you guys!
so there it is.
There’s 11 things you may not have known about me, and I sure hope you enjoyed learning them! If you have any other questions for me, don’t hesitate to shoot me an email here.
